A crane is only as safe as its operator. Even the most advanced crane can cause fatal accidents if mishandled. Here is a checklist of essential skills every certified operator must master.
1. Pre-Start Checks (The "Daily")
Before touching a button, the operator must verify:
- Area Clear: No people or obstacles in the travel path.
- Limit Switches: Test the hoist upper limit switch (without a load).
- Brakes: Verify the hoist brake holds.
- Ropes/Chains: Visual check for kinks or broken wires.
2. Load Balancing & Rigging
The operator must understand the Center of Gravity (CoG).
- Vertical Lift: The hook must be directly over the CoG. If it's off-center, the load will swing dangerously when lifted.
- Sling Angles: Understanding that wider angles increase tension on the slings.
3. Hand Signals
In noisy environments, radios fail. Hand signals are universal.
- Hoist Up: Forefinger pointing up, moving in small circles.
- Hoist Down: Forefinger pointing down, moving in small circles.
- Stop: Arm extended, palm down, moving horizontally.
- Emergency Stop: Both arms extended, palms down, moving horizontally.
4. Controlling Swing (Load Control)
A skilled operator can stop a swinging load by "catching" it. This involves moving the bridge slightly in the direction of the swing to cancel out the momentum. This takes practice.
5. Emergency Procedures
What to do if:
- Power Fails: Return all controllers to neutral.
- Brake Fails: Sound the alarm, lower the load to the ground if possible, or move it to a safe zone.
- Runaway Crane: Hit the Emergency Stop button immediately.
Golden Rule: Never lift a load over people. No exceptions.
